MLA Partner Schools is changing LA schools by recruiting the best and brightest of urban education reformers. We look for exceptional leaders who have a track record of achievement in public education and in the private sector. Ideal candidates will relate well to MLA’s unconventional and entrepreneurial style, and will approach their work with the same progressive, experimental thinking.

MLA staff bring diverse experiences and insight to their work and aren’t afraid to experiment, innovate and take well calculated risks. Read more about the people that make MLA an innovative and relevant organization.

Linh Huynh, Chief of Staff

My name is Linh Huynh, and I am the Chief of Staff for MLA Partner Schools. I started with the organization in 2006 as the fourth employee, and am now proud to work with more than 20 other dedicated professionals. What really attracted me to MLA is what still motivates me today: the incredible vision we share for students and families.

Despite our rapid growth, we have been able to retain our unique office culture. Located in downtown LA, our office is far from the typical "downtown" office; you won’t find any TPS reports or cubicles here. We work on the second floor of a converted warehouse and rely heavily on technology. It isn't unusual to find 4-5 employees gathered around a table, sitting closely together but all working on different projects. Additionally, because many of us spend most of our time at our school sites, we rely heavily on iChat, email and microblogging to communicate.

Collaboration is a core value of MLA's. I am able to bounce ideas around with my colleagues, dialogue about key issues, and constantly refine our current models and methods. I really appreciate that MLA does not believe in the status quo and everyone is encouraged to constantly improve their work product and processes.

The work is challenging because we're pushing for dramatic results which require dramatic change. If you are smart, innovative and passionate about changing the educational and life outcomes for students and their families, I encourage you to join the MLA family.

Amy Orringer, Director of Strategic Planning

My name is Amy Orringer and I am the Director of Strategic Planning for MLA Partner Schools. I’m a recent addition to the MLA staff, having started here in August 2009. I work on a variety of projects which all support the widespread use of data-based decision-making at the school site. I’m hoping to help schools make better use of the information they have about their students to set goals, adopt effective instructional strategies, and align their budgets.

One of the things I love about this challenge is that I get to work with all stakeholders – teachers, administrators, parents and students all have a hand in analyzing data and developing the school-wide strategic plan. Having frank conversations about student data is often eye-opening, and like most teachers, I enjoy watching people have that “ah-ha” moment as they start to connect the numbers with specific strategies to positively impact students.

I tend to be a bit of a dreamer, so I like coming up with ambitious solutions to big problems. This is yet another reason why I feel lucky to be a part of MLA. Not only do I have the space to dream, plan and execute, but I’m also supported by a group of incredibly talented, smart, and driven individuals. MLA fosters an environment of constant collaboration, which often results in a much higher quality final product.

Throughout my career, I’ve searched for a place where the leadership felt like change was possible – where we could choose the difficult path over the status quo, because it is the right thing to do for our kids. I’m so thrilled to have found that in MLA, and excited to be an integral part of the change to come.
